Mount Carmel Area School District Board Policies
Educational Community
The Mount Carmel Area School District is located in rural Northumberland County, PA. It serves a community population of approximately 12,000 people, including Mount Carmel Borough, Mount Carmel Township, Kulpmont Borough, and Marion Heights Borough. The district is classified as a poor and rural community. Approximately 56% of the student population is classified as economically disadvantaged. Mount Carmel Area is considered a blue collar community with a high population of senior citizens. Mount Carmel Area Jr. Sr. High School is composed of approximately 700 students and the Mount Carmel Area Elementary School is composed of approximately 850 students.
The Mount Carmel Area School District is governed by the Mount Carmel Area School District Board of Directors. The Board consists of nine members who are elected for three to four year terms. Terms are staggered so that no more than five members are elected every two years. The attorney for the Board and the Board's external auditor are employed on a part-time basis to meet the legal and auditing responsibilities of the Board. The chief executive officer of the school system is the superintendent who is appointed by the Board.
